Latex thesis document
Maggi Memoir Thesis This template uses the memoir document class to beautifully typeset a thesis. It is carefully structured and separated into multiple parts for easy editing.
Some even have their own templates -- if yours does, probably best to use that. Learning LaTeX can take a little time and patience.

Using the command line For debugging, it might be better to use the command line for latexing. You almost never need to read all of it, and as you get more acquainted with La TeX in general, you'll also get better at finding the important bits which matter for your particular use case. Do not change them or do exactly know what you are doing. Click on a page thumbnail to see a larger picture. Headings are all in boldface, and chapter, section, and subsection headings are numbered. It's a big and good manual, so since you mention you'd like to avoid extensive reading of manuals, it might not be quite the right tool for the job here. As long as you stick to default packages from your distribution, you should be fine.
Read "A short guide to LaTeX" to begin, look at this post: tex. There is this -shell-escape warning.

In addition, many of the class options which are valid for report class are disallowed in thesis class: titlepage, notitlepage, twoside, twocolumn, landscape, legalpaper, a4paper, a5paper, b5paper, and executivepaper.

In a thesis, one-page chapters must be numbered except for the dedication page , and you must do this manually. Using one of these overrides all the base options. Lastly: Don't panic about reading documentation too much. Lists with generally recommended packages have already been linked by others, so I'll avoid repeating those here. It is the sum of the five base options numberchapteronly, emph2underline, plainhead, fixedheadsize, and chapup. Three of the prologue sections are generated by LaTeX and not created explicitly by you; the table of contents, list of figures, and list of tables.
